Diamonds as we all know are the hardest substance ever discovered by man. A very important substance both for industries and fashion trends, diamonds are in high demand because of their toughness and appearance.
Formed by exposure carbon products to high temperature and pressure conditions, they are every woman’s favourite possession. However, like all things in life, are diamonds an ever-lasting entity?
They last long… Really Long:
The answer to the above question is a resounding? yes? Just as no one knows how the diamonds ever appeared on Earth for the first time, no one has come up with an answer on how they are ever going to be destroyed.
Even the small diamond that adorns the ring you gifted your wife will last forever, or at least as long as Earth exists. Scientists have predicted that diamonds, the toughest metals on Earth, can only be destroyed when exposed to temperatures as high as 5500 C.
However the problem remains that Earth’s surface temperature would never amount to that much even when hit by a giant meteor capable of wiping out all forms of life. Diamond would melt if one day, quite literally, it entered the Sun which boasts of a surface temperature of 5800 C.
Although astronomers predict that in another 7.5 million years the earth would definitely enter the Sun, it would be at a time when the famous Star would be nearing its end.
In such a scenario, it is wrong to think that the diamonds would melt. Even in such an eventuality, the Sun would have a lowered surface temperature of around 3000 C which is not enough to melt the diamond.
So even if Earth were to enter an atmosphere as hot and dense as that of Mars, we would still be witness to some diamonds scattered around the surface of our planet.
